Wool and War The heavy purchasing of wool by Japanese firms has brought into currency again rumours of possibilities of the demand having some association with a prospective war (says the Brisbane "Courier"). Rumour has not enlightened us as to whom the enemy or enemies of Nippon are to be. It will be remembered that some six months ago we had reports of heavy buying of tallow on Japanese account, and the movement was in some quarters given a sinister meaning, but a cold-blooded statistician was able to show in the "Courier" that the reports had not gone beyond normal. Japan's active wool buying here and in the south at the moment may be attributed in part to the shorter buying during last season, and a Japanese with some knowledge of the trade says that there has been a development of manufacturing in his country with a possibility of an expansion in the demand for woollens from China. Jt is his belief that the growing Eastern adoption of Western garments will mean a very much wider field for Australian wool disposal.
