Licensing Cases

E. PI. Whitham was charged with unlawfully supplying liquor to George Arthur Debenham, defendant being other than the licensee of the Club Hotel.

Defendant wrote to the court pleading guilty. G. A. Debenham was charged with being found on the licensed premises of the Club Hotel, Stratford, after hours. Defendant wrote to the Court pleading guilty. Sergeant Power, for the prosecution, stated at 11.45 a.m. on Sunday, February 22, he Visited the Club Hotel and found Debenham in the bar with a glass of liquor. Defendant Whitham was quite frank about the matter and stated he served him with it. Debenham’s excuse was that he went to see the licensee on a business matter, and afterwards Whitham, and he joined in conversation, the former being in the bar cleaning up. Whitham was a brother-in-law of the licensee. Debenham was a first offender. The magistrate convicted and fined each defendant 20s, with costs 10s. Cattle Straying Ernest Anderson was charged with allowing cattle to wander on the

Denbigh Road on March 5. County Ranger Cuff gave evidence of finding 18 cows after complaints were received at the country office. He understood the cows had been on the road for a couple of days. The fences were bad.

Dangerous Motoring

J. A. P. Sheehy, of New Plymouth, was charged with driving a motor in Broadway, Stratford, in a manner which might have been dangerous to the public. Defendant, who did not appear, wrote to the court pleading guilty. Sergeant Power conducted the prosecution. Constable Hughes gave evidence of the car travelling at about 50 miles an hour over the intersection at 7.30 p.m. on January 25, from the directioon of the South.

The magistrate convicted and fined defendant 40s and costs 10s, the license to be endorsed.

Sentence of Imprisonment

Leo Farmer was sentenced to a month's imprisonment for diaobed*ence of a maintenance order.
