WAIPUKU HOLLOW

Reporting on behalf of the committee to inspect the Waipuku hollow on the main road, Cr. S. Pitt, at the monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council this morning, said that it certainly looked as if substantial improvement could be made to the road. The place was all right in daylight, but as fogs were heavy in the district there was great danger for motorists. Addition work could be done which might be used in making a permanent road. It was not adbisable to disturb the surface, according to the engineer's (Mr. J. W. Spence) opinion. After the location of the actual roadline, work could be done in cutting the hill away and filling up the hollow. "It would be settled then," said the chairman, Mr. T. R. Anderson.

Cr. Pitt, continuing, said he understood that the Highways Board and the Public Works Department did not look very favourably upon the pro"posal. The engineer pointed out that for any work costing more than £4OO in unemployment relief, it must be considered first by the Highways Board.

On the motion of Cr. Vickers and Best, action was deferred in the meantime.
