NAPIER RESIDENTS school: attendances INCREASE Press Association—Copyright. NAPIER, This Day. _ A steady increase in returning residents brings the number to more than 6,000. During the past week 660 people registered, against 200 during the previous week. Of last week’s total 572 are former residents and 88 non-residents. The school attendances are also increasing rapidly. Unemployed men are now officially stated to total 125. Citizens camped in Nelson Park total 505, as compared with 710 a week ago. Some tent-dwellers will arrive by train to live in the park for a few days, pending putting their homes in order, some of which are far from habitable. Provision has been made for 50 patients in the new temporary hospital on the old site on Hospital Hill, and nurses’ accommodation is provided at the McHardy maternity home. SCORES OF ’QUAKES DISTRICT NEAR GISBORNE THREE TYPES OP TREMORS GISBORNE. March 17. That earthquakes arc not finished with, is clearly evident in the Tiuiroto district about 30 miles from Gisborne. Since February scores of shakes have been experienced, hardly a day passing -without a disturbance. To day it appeared that the first day of complete quietness had come, ami residents were congratulating themselves, when at 9.38 p.m. and 8.44 p.mtwo good sharp shocks were experienced. During scores of shakes houses rocked and several additional chimneys came down. Residents divide the 'quakes into three forms, (1) A sudden upward jolt. (2) Ai smooth undulation gradually working to a climax and gradually dying away. (3) A gentle swing of the earth, which on occasions continues for over ten minutes.

NAPIER, This Day, The remains of one victim were found in Hastings Street and it is suspected that further discoveries in the same locality will be made. PERMITS NOT NEEDED \ Press Association. —Copyright. HASTINGS, This Day. Restrictions in regard to the presentation of permits on roads leading to Napier and Hastings are now lifted and people entering and leaving are not called upon to stop at the request of guards who have been stationed there. The authorities desire all bona fide residents to return as soon as possible. Permits are still necessary for people living temporarily out of town who are not in a position to pay their passage back.
