THE TAX ON BREAD

EXISTING WHEAT DUTIES

MEMBER FOR EGMONT'S VIEW WELLINGTON, March IC. Speaking in the House of Representatives this afternoon Mr C. A. Wilkinson, Independent Member for Egmont, intimated that it was his desire to move an amendment drawing attention to the existing wheat duties and ex pressing the opinion that they should be either Withdrawn or reduced. He regretted that as there already was an amendment before the Houses, he could not move it on the present occasion, but he would take steps to have it submitted when an opportunity offered. Mr H. S. S. Kyle defended the wheat duties and said that if they were removed ttie wheat farmers in the South Island would be put out of business. He stressed the value of the industry to New Zealand, adding that it afforded employment for a large number of men. Mr Kyle also advocated the placing of a dumping duty on maize, barley and chaff, which he asserted was reaching the Dominion in large quantities to the detriment of local growers.
