BOARD'S ACTIVITIES. DECREASE IN NUMBERS. WELLINGTON, March 14. The total number of unemployed registered at labour bureaux throughout the Dominion for the week ended March 9 was 29,941, an apparent increase of 507 when compared with the figure for the previous week. In supplying thisi nformation the Minister of Labour, Hon. S,' Smith, said the returns showed that hew or renewed applications for work totalled 5476, of which 2691 were from persons who had not previously registered during the past 12 months. The total of 13,096 men were qualified for and placed in work under schemes inaugurated by the Unemployment Board. Deducting these from the I Dial applications, it show r ed that there has been an actual reduction for the week of 470. Particulars of registrations in the main centres for the week ‘ under review are as follow:

The total registrations in the centres were as follow, figures for the previous week being in parentheses: Auckland 6718 (6639); Wellington 4363 (4088); Christchurch 3635 (4082); Dunedin 2339 (2216); Invercargill 791 (699). Excluding the men placed under the above-mentioned schemes, the position regarding registratiohs w r as as follows at March 9, the previous week’s figures being in parentheses; Auckland 5674 (5761); Wellington 1893 (1757); Christchurch 1128 (1299); Dunedin 609 (612); Invercargill 215 (253); Other towns 7326 (7633): grand total 16,845 (17,315)—an actual reduction for the \veek of 470.
