MODEL FARM

FARM AND SCHOOL PROPOSALS FOR CO-OPERATION Proposals for co-operation between the Stratford Demonstration Farm Society and the Stratford Technical High School were discussed at the monthly meeting of the society. The chairman, Mr. J. M. Smith, read a report suggesting that the pupils could assist regarding a survey of the farm, weighing df ensilage, cropping trials, forestry and general work. It was resolved that the chairman’s report be adopted and that a field day be held for the pupils and staff of the school on a date suitable to the chairman and Mr. Amess, the school principal. Suggestions by the chairman for top-dressing trials as follow were adopted: Field 14: 1, super; 2, basic slag; 3, slag (high grade); 4, slag (Tow grade Albert); 5 soluble slag; 6, African phosphate: 7, African super; 8, phosfull; 9, potassic phosfull; 9a, super and ammonia mixed on the job: 10, ammoniated super; 11, super, blood and bone: 12, super and nitrate soda; 13, super and lime. Across all plots there would be a strip of 30 per cent, potash and ammonia and three brands of fish manure. There was a general discussion on the feeding of pigs, and it was suggested that different trials in feeding be arranged. A decision was deferred until the next meeting. The manager reported that there was more grass this year, due to good season. At present there were 58 milking cows, 15 in-calf heifers and four in-calf cows, which would be available for the herd next year. It was suggested that 100 sheep be purchased and it was resolved that Messrs. Marfell, Marchant, Ware and Tarrant be a stock committee to go into the matter with power to act. The committee met later at the farm and decided to purchase 100 soundmouthed ewes and two Southdown rams. The secretary reported that the butter-fat for the season ended on February 28 was 14,0071 b., showing an increase of 1,4671 b. on the previous season. EXECUTIVE MEETING The executive of the Stratford Jersey Cattle Club met on Saturday and completed arrangements for the field day to be held at Mr. G. R. Bfell’s property, Waipuku, on Wednesday. Those present were Messrs. D. O’Sullivan (president), H. J. Kaye, W. Johnson, S. Gadsby, C. H. Clemow and G. Bell. The catering was left, to Messrs. Bell and Gadsby. About 20 pupils from the Stratford Technical High School will attend the field day and a judging competition will be organised for them. Nominations for the futurity stakes close on March 31. There is no minimum limit to the number of entries. The matter was left to the end of the month, when it will be reviewed.
