RACING ROUND THE COAST

(By ‘‘Sir Oracle.”)

Opunake and surrounding district have their big day to-mor-row, when the Opunake Racing Club’s annual fixture promises to provide a happy hunting ground for Taranaki sportsmen. As all the aristocrats of racehorses will be found at Trentham, it is only natural that the competitors racing at the coastal fixture are almost entirely confined to Taranaki performers. However, the fields for the majority of events are surprisingly good. Lack of capable riders may be the drawback, so that investors may be well advised to take special note of those horses that will not suffer on the score of poor horsemanship. CARD REVIEWED Handicap Hack Hurdles, of £125; 11 miles. —Tenacre, 11.3; The Warden, 9.13; Goblin Market, 9.11; Denier, 9.0; Winacre, 9.0; Copey, 9.0; Waltzer 9.0. Tenacre’s form over the Taranaki circuit last month was so encouraging that he looks the best of good things for the Handicap Hack Hurdles. The Warden has returned to form on the flat, so if he can jump at all, should have some prospects. Goblin Market will have to improve considerably to finish ahead of Tenacre, for one. Waltzer and Winacre have slight chances. The money should go to Tenacre, The Warden (if started), and Goblin Market.

Maiden Plate, of £100; 6J fur. — Lord Merriwee, 9.1; Ngapara, 8.11; Goldzone, 8.3; Peter Jackson, G. 12; Sparkling Morn, 6.9; Hiueihmi, 6.9; Silver Tinge, 6.9.

Peter Jackson has shown such promising form against much better opposition that he should have little difficulty in taking the Maiden Plate. In his five-furlong essays, the Hawera youngster has always finished on strongly, so that the extra distance should not trouble him. Goldzone was placed at Stratford and has shown fair promise. .Sparkling Morn may collect minor money. It looks like Peter Jackson and Goldzone.

Railway Hack Handicap, of £110; 7 fur.—Joyspear, 9.0; Tentcall, 8.10; The Warden, 8.8; Bon Eve, 8.2; Chief Savage, 7.13; Orby’s Choice, 7.13; Singer, 7.8; Banbridge, 7.8; Miss Shef. 7.5; Biflex, 7.5; Potoleer, 7.3; Corwen, 7.0: Lucrative, 7.0.

While the form of those engaged in the Railway Hack Handicap is well exposed, half a dozen at least must be wsll considered. Tentcall is always fikely over seven furlongs. Bon Eve surprised at Rangitikoi by beating a good-class hack field including Leisure and Lordlike. The Warden was second in the same race, and is a most likely improver, if started in preference to the hurdles. Singer has been a costly disappointment, hut must be given credit for fully extending an extra good hack in Paratoo at Rangitikei. Joyspear may take on the Cup, but must be respected if started in this event. Chief Savage, Orby’s Choice and Banbridge are all likely, the former especially. Tentcall, Bon Eve and Chief Savage make most appeal. No Champions, But Even Lot Opunake Cup, of £275; 1J miles. — Paitonu, 9.0; Richfield, 8.6; Calamine, 8.3; Manly, 7.13; Crenna Town, 7,10; Kawhakina, 7.9; Moualof, 7.9; Joyspear, 7.6; Bonogne, 7.5; Orazone, 7.5; Royal Acre, 7.4; Gasnapper, 7.0. While the Opunake Cup is confined entirely to Taranaki horses, an interesting race is promised from the evenly matched dozen carded. Since Christmas Calamine has been the soul of consistency, and the Hawera mare’s gallant effort to finish right up with Royal Parade and Vertigorn in the Paul Memorial at New Plymouth suggests that she must take all kinds of beating to-morrow. Mr. Tito holds a strong hand with the Pailonu-Monalof bracket. Both appeal, but if Paitonu is near right, then. Calamine will have stout opposition. If Richfield comes back from Trentham he must be respected, although the sprint may suit him better. Well ridden, Crennatown should have a fair show. However, one cannot look beyond Calamine and the Paitonu-Monalof bracket.

OPUNAKE OFFERS ATTRACTION GOOD FIELDS ENSURE INTEREST

RIDERS MAY BE THE PROBLEM

Electric Hack Handicap, of £110; 5 fur.—King Acre, 9.0; Moatoa, S.l; Goldzone, 7.2; Ngapara, 7.0; Theresa Bell, 7.0; Spring Song, 7.0; True Lap, 7.0; Compulsory, 7.0. King Acre and Moatoa should have it all to themselves iu the Electric Hack Handicap. If the top-weight gives a repetition of his Christmas form, then lie should stroll home. However, he went very badly at Bulls, and is not a reliable beginner. Still, he is a class above the rest of them, and has only to be caught iu the mood. Moatoa is only very ordinary, but has the merit of always running consistently. Goldzone and Spring Song should fight out the minor placing. There seems no need to look beyond King Acre and Moatoa. Fine Feld of Sprinters St. Patrick’s Handicap, of £175; (i fur. —Reremoana, 9.3; Awaken, S.B; Richfield, 8.6; Melissa, 7.13; Orapai, 7.11; Gold Dawn, 7.11; Green Linnet, 7.9; Calamine, 7.9; Calapat, 7.6; Bonogne, 7.6; Belle Star, 7.3. Probably the best field that has ever paraded at Opunake is promised for the St. Patrick’s Handicap sprint. Reremoana may need a race or two as yet, but represents such top class that it would be extremely foolish to pass him over. Back to form he would make this company look cheap over the final furlong. Awaken also represents good class, having beaten Autopay and company at Trentham in October. Mr. A. Alexander’s sprinter may just need the race, but there seems every prospect of Awaken giving of the best, even though fresh up. But the one that really looks dangerous, and about which there is no doubt as to condition, is Orapai. Mrs. Graham’s sprinter has never been in better heart, as proved by his recent brilliant track gallop over five furlongs in Imin 1 4-ssec. Gold Dawn has also been going “great guns” at New Plymouth, while Richfield has the proved class, if he is back to form. Not being a quick beginner, Calamine will find it difficult, should she go after the “double.” Such a fast beginner as Green Linnet must also be counted in. Still, form and class undoubtedly point to Orapai, Awaken and Reremoana.

President’s Hack Handicap, of £ J 25; 9 fur.—Monalof, 9.3; Crenna Town, 9.2; Little Doubt, 7.12; Gasnapper, 7.11; Omeo, 7.7; Banbridge, 7.7; Miss Shef, 7.5; Potoleer, 7.0; Corwen, 7.0; Richland, 7.0. If reserved, Monalof and Crenna Town should make their presence felt in the President’s Hack Handicap, but Little Doubt’s victory at Rangitikei over a field that included Mountain Heath suggests that many speculators will not have a doubt about which to support. Still, Monalof is one of the best hacks at present racing in the country. Omeo has been going well on the tracks, and looks a distinct hope. Monalof and Little Doubt, with Omeo seem the likely ones. Form Earlier in the Day Should Tell Farewell Hack Handicap, of £110; 6 fur.—King Acre, 9.0; Tentcall, 8.10; Gowanlua, 8.2; Bon Eve, 8.2; Orby’s Choice, 7.13; Singer, 7.9; Green Patch, 7.9; Bificx, 7.7; Spring Song, 7.0; Compulsory, 7.0; Lucrative, 7.0. If King Acre wins the'five earlier in the day, backers wili know what to do, if the Bulls representative comes out again in the Farewell Hack event. The extra furlong will be all in favour cf King Acre. Gowan Lea is fair, hut most of the rest of them claim earlier engagements. I: they are sent out again, the finish may he between King Acre, Tentcall and Singer. WELLINGTON MEETING WELLINGTON, March 14. The Taranaki horse, Silvermine, won the Thompson Handicap at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting today. Karapoti won the North Island Challenge Stakes from Lady Qnex and Lady Pam heat King March in the New Zealand St. Legor. Additional results:— .
