SOUTH TARANAKI SHOWS BETTER FORM

FIELDING, BATTING AND BOWLING IN ANNUAL - ; :■ « - Vf . '- representative match GAME AGAINST RANGITIKEI

Played at Hawera on Saturday, the annual representative match between South Taranaki and Rangitikei served to emphasise the fact that this season the standard of cricket in South Taranaki has. made a definite advance. Rangitikei fielded a team in allri-ound strength little inferior to that which defeated Manawatu, for the Hawke Cup lust season, yet it was time alone that saved it from a first innings defeat after the home side had displayed superior form in batting, bowling and fielding, Batting first, South, Taranaki scored 239 by consistently solid, though slow, cricket, relieved in parts by bright individual efforts, and in response to this score Rangitikei had lost seven wickets for. 128 runs when stumps were drawn.

Barker a,ml li.etts. opened well, for the hopie side, the former being particularly enterprising, while Betts gave a very sound display for 55. Lay showed v ,aggression, powerful driving yielding him :35 runs in quick time. After an uncertain start Dormer settled; down to ,play steady cricket, and when the innings terminated was unbeaten, with 49 to his credit. Wilson, the list man in, treated the, spectators to q, few . minutes of spectacularly virile hitting, and the partnership between him, and Dormer for the tenth, wicket was the liveliest of, the match. Barton was, perhaps, as difficult as. any of the Rqngitikei bowlers, who kept steadily to their task without being especially troublesome. The immediate dismissal of D. Cameron, their star batsman, followed by Burke’s inability to stay for any length of time, placed a handicap on Raugitikei under vSlch it was* still struggling when stumps were drawn with 128, runs scored for the loss of seven wickets. , Marshall topscored with a, correct 37, but though he, together with Innes and, , Hayward, batted with comparative freedom," the well-xarjed. South Taranaki thowiing, supported hy very good; fielding, was in the ascendancy throughout. Lay and Wilson were the best bowlers.
