Steps preparatory to the formation of a firebligbt committee for Canterbury wore taken at a recent meeting jf the Canterbury Fruitgrowers' Association. Three members were nominated for the committee, and it y> as decided that the Tomato and Stone-fruit Growers' Association be invited to nominate one member each, to obviate the need for an election. The position in regard to fireblight In Chistenurch was described by Mr H. 6. Goodwin, Government orchard instructor, as still serious. He said 10 inspectors hsd visited orchards in Christchureh in the past fortnight, and 1.1 places were found where fruit trees wero infected. These had been cut out. and destroyed, removing sources of infection for next year. In one case an orchard of eight or nine acres was destroyed. "The position is serious," Mr Goodwin said, "but not so serious that we cannot control it.'' A motion was carried agreeing to a levy being made for this yeai s'o that the committee, when elected, would have funds to start its work.
