FOREIGN TIMBER
USE IN EARTHQUAKE AREA. REQUEST TO GOVERNMENT. WELLINGTON, aMrch I,'!. Speaking in (lie House of Reprosontat.ivcs to-day, in reply to Mr V. Langstone, Hun. G. W. Forbes stated Ihat the Public Works Department had been instructed to use New Zealand timber wherever possible. Mr Langstono stated that if, seemed that speculatoi's intended to import timber with a view to having il used in reconstruction in the earthquake area. A large shipment of foreign timber had recently arrived at Napier. He asked the Government to prevent the possibilities of any part of the relief funds being spent on imported timber when New Zealand millers had plenty of supplies on hand to meet all demands. The Prime Minister said he had ascertained f-hat one merchant hud imported a supply of tindie,', lie did not anticipate that relief funds would be used for building purposes.
