TENNIS CLUB AND COUNCIL
ARRANGEMENTS FOR COURTS "The original arrangement with the Borough Council was one shilling per member," stated the president of the Stratford Tennis Club (Mr. Lawrence) to the Stratford "Post" today, when speaking in reference to the use of the courts on Victoria Park. Lately, he continued, there was an arrangement to pay* 2s a member for the curent year; then the Borough Council asked for 5s a member and said it wanted that subscription from October next. Members of the club did not agree 1 to such an increase and held a special meeting last evening. The meeting resolved to make an offer to the council and request to be allowed the use of the ground now used as nursery, which was included in the conditions of the original agreement between the council and the club. The tennis committee contemplate putting down two new courts on this part of the park. Mr. Lawrence pointed out that the club had spent about £375 in improvements, including the pavilion, and he claimed it was practically a gift from the tennis club to the town; also the Borough Council had no outlay in upkeep of the grounds, as was the case in regard to football and cricket, which clubs contributed nothing at all. The Mayor (Mr. P. Thomson), Town Clerk (Mr. P. Skoglund) and Councillor S. Ward represented the Borough Coun r cil at the meeting.
