CLAY-BIRD SHOOTING

CARNIVAL CUP MEETING FIRST-BARREL trophy won by J. PETRIE A very successful-meeting was held by the Stratford Gun Club yesterday pu the A. and P. Showgrounds as a special feature of the carnival programme. During the afternoon hundreds watched the shooting with interest, for to many it was quite a novelty. The Mayor, Mr. P. Thomson, and Mrs. Thomson, were among those who for the first time saw the sport in progress. As patron of the Gun Club, the Mayor was welcomed by the officials. The working of the trap and the general arrangements were explained to the visiters. The shoots were keenly contested, as many as 17 competing in one of Hie five events of the day. Shooters were present from New Plymouth, El tham, Hawcra and Alton Clubs. The standard of the marksmanship was far from the usual when competition is keen, and on the whole could be classed as only mediocre. This may he accounted for by the fact that the ground and surroundings were new, also that a hand-trap was used in stead of the automatic, and that visibility was poor at times owing to (he glare of sunshine. However, three “possibles” were registered during the day.

There was mißdi interest among the competitors concerning the winning of the trophy donated by the A. and P. Association for the shooter registering most, first-barrel hits in three of the events, namely, the Carnival Cup, ITawera Handicap and New Plymouth Flutter. J. Petrie, the club’s treasurer, was in good form and had 25 out of 30 shots to his credit. The runnors-un were B. Green (Strntford) and A. E. Davies (Alton! with 24 each. A. Nelson (Stratford) won the Carnival Cup event with a score of 13 out of a possible 15. Mr. Phil Skoghmd capably officiated as referee, and his return to the shoot, after several years since ho acted as secretary to the club, was much appreciated by the president, Mr. G. A.
