Pictures of “Mills” On his present trip to New Zealand Sir James Mills brought enlarged photographs of his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. William Mills, for presentation to the Otago Early Settlers’ portrait gallery, and they are now hung there alongside Sir James’s portrait. Mr. and Mrs. Mills came out to Wellington, but they moved to Dunedin in 1849, Mr. Mills being appointed collector of Customs at Port Chalmers and Dunedin. They took passage from Wellington with their family, by the schooner Twins, 46 tons, Captain Bennett, and she reached Port Chalmers on December 13, 1849. James was then two years old, born in Wellington. David was the baby. Mr. Walter Mantell was another incomer to Otago by that passage of the schooner. The pair of portraits now added to the Otago gallery are in their fitting place, for “Mills” is indelibly written in the history of the province.
