MANSION TO BE CLOSED
VISCOUNT ASTOR'S HOME. TAXES £7O OUT OF EVERY £IOO LONDON, Jan. 29. Cliveden, the beautiful mansion of Viscount Astor on the Buckinghamshire side of the Thames near Maidenhead, is to be closed. Annoucing his decision at a meeting of the tenantry and employees—numbering about 70—Lord Astor explained that it had been brought about by heavy taxation. Deep regret was expressed by Lord Astor at having to effect; such economies that would mean the dismissal of about 30 of his staff. Each department, he intimated, would be affected in this respect. He declared that for every £IOO ho had the State took £7O. Lord Astor has let his residence at Truro, Cornwall, and he intends to live more in London and will probably take a smaller place in the country, probably at Sunninghilh Cliveden is one of the show places of England. It looks grandly from its Buckinghamshire heights down to the Berkshire levels at Cookham. Some time ago Lord Astor came to an agreement with the Cookham and Windsor District Council, by which the amenities and open spaces of Cliveden Reach would be preserved for all time.
