RAILWAY RENTALS
HOUSES OF EMPLOYEES HEAVY INCREASES SHOWN TO PROTEST IN PARLIAMENT DWEDIN, March 5. The very heavy increases in the rentals of houses leased to railway servants by the Department, have been brought under notice by the member for Chalmers, increases in some cases amounting to as much as 300 per cent.' Instances of increases which came into force on February 1 are as follows, the new rental being shown in parentheses: —7s (id (22s Gd); 15s (33s 9d); 15s (44s (3d); 8s fid (24s 6d); fis (id (19s); 9s Gd (28s 8d); 10s Gd (24s 8d). Mr Ansoll, M.P., has communicated with the Minister on the subject and has received a reply stating that the increases were imposed as the result of the Royal Commission's recommendations, and after a very close investigation. It is not considered that the men are being harshly dealt with. Mr Ansell adds that he intends to voice a protest in the House. ¥ #
