MEETING OF THE COUNCIL OPERATIONS FOR THE MONTH The monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council, held in Stratford this morning, was attended by Messrs. T. R. Anderson (chairman), S. Pitt, T. T. Murray, J. C. Best, W. Were, W. Vickers, R. Mounsey, L. Bunn and H. C. Taylor. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. J. T. Belcher. Unemployment Relief The action of the chairman, Mr. T. R. Anderson, and Cr. S. Pitt, in donating £SO from the council’s funds was approved on the motion of Mrs. Mounsey and Bunn. The Kiore Tunnel The engineer stated he had made an estimate of the cost of work on the tunnel at Kiore, the sum being £2OO for 118 feet. Cr. Mounsey referred to the necessity of repairs being effected, stating that one and a-half tons of material had come down recently, and he Sad been in communication with Mr. Poison, M.P., on the subject on behalf of the settlers. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Pitt, seconded by Cr. Bunn, that the engineer confer with the Public Works Depuartment on the subject; also that notices warning traffic of the danger be erected at each end of the tunnel. General On the motion of Cr. Pitt, it was resolved that a conference of North Riding members and the chairman inspect the hollow’ at Waipuku, with a view to effecting improvement. Cr. Pitt and Cr. Bunn seconded that the council favourably consider any applications from settlers for fencing of road reserves in Mangaehu Riding, growing noxious weeds. —Carried. Cr. Bunn, speaking in regard to the finance in Mangaehu Riding, asked that the loan be held up for some months. It was the opinion of the chairman that Mangaehu should keep the account open, or there might be difficulty in obtaining the money in future. Cr. Bunn said he would be satisfied if it was delayed for a few months.

The engineer was instructed to keep the Makuri Stream clean, with a limit of three months’ work. This was agreed to in accordance with a previous arrangement for an anqual maintenance after the work had been done on behalf of the settlers. Mrs. E. J. Young wrote complaining of neglect on the part of a ratepayer to clear out drains in the Ngaere survey district. —It was resolved on the motion of Crs. Best and Bunn that notice be given the ratepayer to clear the drains, to give Mrs. Young an outlet, failing which the engineer be empowered to carry out the work and charge same to the ratepayer concerned. Correspondence Mr. R. W. Larsen, North Egmont, Inglewood, wrote to the Cliftqn County Council drawing attention to the state of the Upper Waitara Valley track, owing to bad slips and washouts making it difficult to handle stock. As his means of access was through the Stratford County, the letter was forwarded to this council. —On the motion of Crs. Mounsey ahd Pitt it was resolved that the writer be requested to apply to the Clifton Council for a refund on his rates, so that they might be spent on the road to give him access through Ngatimaru Riding. Mr. C. A. Marchant, on behalf of the Cardiff Dairy Company, asked if it would be possible to improve the “elbow'” know'n as Stewart’s Hill, on the Opunake Road, pointing out that he understood a grant of land would be obtained in order to make the change.—The engineer and clerk were instructed to reply, explaining the position from the council’s point of view, and showing what steps had been taken by the engineer to acquire the land necessary for the deviation; also what further action had to be taken.
