HUIROA SWAMP

SCHEME FOR DRAINAGE All application to have the Huiroa Swamp drained under the No. 5 Unemployment Scheme was read at the Stratford County Council meeting today, the settlers interested being Messrs. Woods, Bray, Fletcher, Mitchell (2) and the School Committee. Mr. N. B. Fletcher waited on the council and explained the position. The settlers wanted to know if the council would agree to this. Mr. Fletcher said it was estimated that the country would then carry about 150 dairy stock. The scheme would improve the flow of the stream very considerably. About 120 chains of work would be done. There were several unemployed men in the district, and the necessary, accommodation would be provided, so that unemployed from the town could be employed. The settlers would provide everything but the labour. Councillors agreed it would be a good idea to have the work done.

Mr. Fletcher said that from the point of view of the amount of water to be handled in the year, it was a matter of urgency now. He agreed to inquire as to whether the council could do work on private property under the Unemployment No. 5 scheme. '■**'

On the motion of Crs. Murray and Were it w'as resolved that the council approve the scheme and approach the Unemployment Board with regard to its position in the matter, employment to be found for eight men.
