The Union (Steam Shir) Company advises that owing to the abnormal slackness of trade between New Zealand and Australia, it will be necessary to discontinue the running oi' the Maiieno in the Melbourne-New Zealand service in the middle of next month. It is hoped that conditions in the inter-colonial trade Avill have improved sufficiently to permit of the resumption of the Maheno towards the end of the year, in order to cater for the requirements of the tourist traf-j fie during the summer months. In the meantime the regular cargo service between Melbourne and New Zealand ports, as at present, will be maintained from, the end of March by, a cargo steamer at three-weekly intervals. Owing to slackness in the Sydney service the Maunganui will be withdrawn at the same time as the Maheno, which withdraws on the return from Melbourne on the March sth fixture from that port, and the Maunganui after arrival at Auckland on leaving Sydney on March 13th.
