Mrs. L. E. Palmer left Ibis morning on a visit to Palmerston North. I Mr. R. It. Turner, a missionary, stationed at Fyi'e 'Bay, Papua, arrived at Auckland by the Ulimaroa on Tuesday on furlough. Mr. N. X. Emilslof, a Swedish botanist, arrived at Auckland from Sydney by the Ulimaroa on Tuesday, with the object of making a study of the flora of Xew Zealand. Two sisters of Mrs. R. D. Lewers, j Mesdames Carr and Wilson, and Mr. P. C. Carr, paid a short visit to her on their way back to their home at Auckland,! after a visit to Napier. Mr. Carr motored to Napier from Auckland on business, arriving on Monday night. He loft Napier just after the earthquake for Stratford, and this morning continued the journey to Auckland. - - -«^ Mr. 0. M. Spe'nce, of New Plymouth, returned from Napier last night. Between Hastings and Woodville he met over 1,000 cars travelling in the opposite direction and containing only the driver. They were being sent by request by the automobile associations to assist in the evacuation of women and children from Napier.

Mr. Errol Morton is at present in Napier, doing relief work on a warship. Being on his annual leave from the Taranaki Power Board's office, Mr. Morton left Stratford on Monday, en route to Gisborne on a holiday visit. He arrived at Napier shortly after the shake and has now advised his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Morton, of New Plymouth, that he is engaged on relief work, as" stated above.

Among those who perished in the Nastier earthquake was the mother of Mr. A. R. Thompson, manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, New Plymouth. She had been staying with her daughter, and on Tuesday morning went to town, an unusual proceeding for her. Tnere she was overwhelmed. Mr. Thompson and relatives will have the sincere sympathy of the whole community in their great and tragic loss.
