TILE elections in New South Wales will shortly be held, and the result will have a far-reach-ing" effect on the future of the whole of the Australian Commonwealth. Mr. Lang;, the Labour leader, has announced the policy of his party, and if he is placed in the position of carrying' out that policy the rehabilitation of the country will be long' deferred. Mr. Lang—or rather the Trades Unions which he represents—favours further borrowing to meet heavy expenditure which his public works policy would require, but where he is c'oino- to ffet the monev is a puzzle. If he is. successful in obtaininy further loan moneys, it will only be at a high rale of interest. He has also promised the workers a 30-hour week ayl a 25 per cent, increase in the present rate of wages. It might be that Mr. Lang has overreached himself in his election campaign. The average worker is an intelligent man and must realise how impossible it would be to trv and fulfil these promises in face of the present economic position of Australia. Like many other Labour leaders Mr. Laria- refuses to face facts He is an able politician, and hopes to trull the people with promises which he knows in his own mind, if put into operation. would involve the State and the whole Commonwealth in a disaster compared with which the present financial depression would be a small matter.
