A tribute to New Zealand-made goods was paid by the engineer of the Mackenzie County Council (Mr D. Jeune), at a recent council meeting, when' ho stated that the council’s crushing plant had recently picked up a heavy hammer head from the river bed. The crusher wa s fitted with two jaws, one of American manufacture and the other New Zealand-made. The former had been flattened out by the heavy hammer, while the local jaw had come through the operation' without the slightest mark or defect.

A Big Trout, ; A 151 b trout caught in the Halswell River is the latest bag to he reported (states the Christchurch, Sun). In the earlier part of the season the Halswell is a very good stream for fly fishing. The warm and nor’-westry weather being experienced will have the effect of improving conditions for fly fishing, a reporter was told the other day. It causes the flies to hatch out, and Unis makes it possible to use this kind of bait. America’s Workless, America lias no dole (says a correspondent of the Wellington Post). The lot of the workless there is hard. There is no national, State, or municipal relief, and there is no place for the moneyless man out of work to obtain aid ( unless he happens to he a member of a trade union or some lodge. The resources of those are limited. So he goes into the street. There is not even the statistical machinery for ascertaining the number of workless. Estimates vary from 3,000,000 to 6,000,000 at present.
