ACTIVITY AT ROTORUA.

An eruption occurred on the shore of Lake Rotorua midway between the man, oath building and the new baths early on Friday morning, states the Rotorua correspondent of the "New Zealand Herald." It was first noticed by the watchman at the new Ward pavilion baths. He saw a large mass of black mud and stones and a large volume of steam being thrown up from 60ft to 100 ft into the air. This continued for several hours. The site of the eruption previously consisted of two separate mud-holes with a rocky division between. This division has been blown away, leaving a cauldron of boiling black mud and water about 35ft in diameter. For a distance of about 100 ft the mud and water have flowed into the lake, leaving a. black and oily-looking deposit on the surrounding rocky surface. During the day the eruption slowly subsided until by 4 o'clock on Friday afternoon there was a boiling pool with the, centre bubbling uo to a height of about 12in.
