Members of the general committee said that Mr Were had been long associated with the society and had always taken an active interest in it. He had judged the field rods at the winter show. It was considered Mr Were had well earned the i distinction conferred on him. ' j An e arly settler of th© Stratford district died at Henderson, Auckland; on Wednesday, at the age of ; 89, in the person of Mr George W. i Calvert. He was born at Newark, i Ragland, and h e came to New PlyI laud as a young man, after a few I years spent fis a sailor in various parts of the world. For over fifj teen years he was engaged as a j master in the coastal trade. Fifty ( years ago he took up farming in the j Ngaei'e district, where lie w r as one jof the earliest settlers. Later he | ran the boardinghouse at Strathmore > which w r as a well-know*n point in those days, as it was the stopping ! place for for dinner on the coach, I journey to and from Whangamo- ; mona. Calvert is survived by his widow j and nine children, on e of whom is i Mrs W. G. Thurston, of Pembroke I Road. ;
