WOEKERS SAID TO BE ILL-PAID 5 AMD 6 SHILLINGS A DAY WELLINGTON, July 30 In the House of Representatives this evening the Hon- J. G. Coates drew the attention of the Minister %of Public Works to the rates of pay on several contract works in and near his district. He said men were averaging approximately five or six shillings daily . Mr H, T. Armstrong said tho rates of pay on contract work should not fall below the usual minimum of 14s. He considered that many men he knew on these works were capable of earning A>s a day, yet they coulds not alway get “the miserable minimum. ’’ He complained that conditions on relief works had not improved, and further there were too many accidents owing to inexperienced men being allowed to use explosives.
