Yesterday the work of enlarging and concreting No. 2 tuimel on the Stratford-Main Trunk railway was completed, piercing having been completed in March last. It is expected that No. 3 tunnel will be piercing at an early date. Opening Day. The Methodist Tenni s Club has decided to hold its opening day on Thursday, October 17th, the week after the opening of the Stratford Club. At last might’s meeting of the Methodist Tennis Club it 'was stated that there were several things on tlie courts that required attention before the opening day. To do the necessary repair g it was decided to hold a working bee during the next week. , Tennis Association. At the meeting of the Methodist Tennis Club last night, it was decided to affiliate with the Taranaki Tennis Association. The affiliation ,fee was not very large, it wa s stated, and by joining the Association the Club would be allowed to enter members for the Taranaki Tennis competitions. A Massive Casting. The Union Foundries have just completed a massive casting for the Borough Council—a new back wheel for the Council’s steam roller, weigh ing 1 1-4 tons, sft 2in in diameter, ytfO inches wide, the rim being two inches thick. The old wheel had been worn, from 1£ inches down to seven-eighths of an inch. The size of the casting is a good indication ■of the wide scope of tile work at the local foundry. ;

A very satisfactory state of affairs was disclosed at last night’s meeting of th© South African War Veterans’ Association' attendance at me meeting was a record, and the credit balance shown on the balance-sheet! was the highest in the history of the Association. The present, (Mr J. W. McMillan) proposed that some-, body else should be elected in his -dace. Mr Richardson told Mr McMillan that if he could propose, somebody as good as himself the . meeting would elect him. The meeting decided that no bettor president could be found than Mr McMillan, and that Mr T. Lawson could not be bettered as secretary. Tents for Motor Campers. Or. Ward suggested at last night’s meeting of the Remain Board that tents should be procured for letting out to campers. Or. Trotter supported the idea.
