TAKAMKI STOCK MARKET* Messrs Newton Kins. Limited, report for the week < uding August i 10 -— , Beef. —Supplies of. first quality cattle under this heading are by no means plentiful in North Taranaki, resulting in great numbero fo the requirements for local consumption in the northern end being fulfilled from southern supplies. Judging from outside reports, it i s evident that there is also a shortage of this class in other districts, and it is natural to conclude that prices will have a tendency to harden from now on. During the week sales of the various classes have been effected at the following rates: Extra heavy prime fat bullocks £l6, heavy fat bullockg £l4 to £ls, Lighter sorts £l2 to £l3, heavy prime fat young cows £l2, heavy fat cows £lO to £ll, lighter sorts £S to £9. Fat sheep.—Firm prices are still in evidence under this heading, and butchers’ requirtments are still being fulfilled through the medium of private treaty, for the reason that our open markets are practically devoid of any of • thi s class. Price ruling are a follow: Heavy prime fat wethers £2 fat wethers 38s, light and unfinished 35s to 3Gs, extra heavy prime fat ewes 30s, fat ewes 2Ss, lighter sorts 26s to 275. Store sheep.—The demand for all classes under this heading is steady, although the inquiry for hoggets and wethers is a little brighter than perhaps it is for in-lamb ewes; however,, sales of all classes are being steadily effected at prices equal to late quotations. Only small lots of the different classes are being submitted at our fortnightly fixtures, resulting in any sales of any consequence being effected through the medium of private treaty. Quotations of hoggets are a little more plentiful than they were some few j weeks ago, and with the strong de- j mand that is in evidence for this i class, ready sales are being effected j at prices pleasing to vendors. Quotations for wethers are, however, / not so plentiful, and prospective purchasers of this class are experi- f encing difficulty in fulfilling their requirements. Prices at present ruling under this heading range as

| follows; iG(bod-framed mixed age I ewes in lamb t 0 Romney rams 365, (best 4 and 5-year-old ewes 33s to | 34s Gd, good framed and good con- | ditioned full mouth ewes 30s, full ! mouth ewes in light condition 24s to 255, cull s 20s to 225, good quality mixed sex hoggets 28s 6d, smaller sorts 24s t 0 265, good wether hoggets 26s 6d to 27s 6d, smaller sorts 23s to 24s 6d, good ewe hoggets 30s, others 26s to 28s, 2 and 4-tooth wethers in forward condition 31s to 32s 6d, store wethers 28s to 295. Store cattle—The inquiry for all classes under this heading is very strong, and in view of the fact that quotations of any classes are of a very limited nature, prospective purchasers are naturally experiencing much difficulty in fulfilling their requirements. Offerings at our Gvarious centres have diminished considerably, consisting largely of \ small entries of store and forward cows, together with fair numbers of yearling heifers, while male cattle are conspicuous by their absence. | Empty sound cows are also in keen j demand, and anything possessing any quality is meeting with a ready sale at prices, if anything, in advance to those that were offering at this period last year. Yearling Jersey and Jersey cros s heifers are also keenly sought after, and in view of the fact that few top quality cattle are coming forward to our fortnightly sales, the prices ruling for medium quality sorts are in advance to those anticipated earlier in the season. Sales for the various classes under the hammer during the week have been effected as follows: Gjood framed and good coloured store cows £5 15s to £6 10s, mixed coloured horts £4 5s to £4 15s, works cows £3 to £4 ss, boners £2 5s to £2 10s, good quality young sound empty cows up to £7, others £5 to £6, two year old empty Jersey cross heifers £5 13s to £6, .20-months empty Friesian heifers £5 9s to £6, fair quality weaner Jersey heifers £5 10s to £6, fair quality Jersey and Jersey cross heif- • ers £5 10s to £6, smaller sorts £4 10s to £5, 20 month Friesian steers £5 13s to £6, yearling Friesiam steers £4 10s to £4 15s; while few, if any, of the other classes of male cattle have been submitted. Sales through the medium of pri- 1 vate treaty for yearling Jersey and Jersey cross heifers have been effected at the undermentioned prices: Best quality yearling Jersey heifers practically all fawns and by pedigree Jersey bulls £7 to £7 10s, good sorts £6 10s to £6 15s. Dairy cattle.—Good entries of this class are coming forward to our fortnightly sales, and buyers are still operating freely, resulting in steady competition being in evidence practically throughout ®ach sale, and full clearances are being effected at satisfactory prices. There is also a fair inquiry from outside ■ buyers for in calf heifers, and sales of these are steadily being effected, largely through the medium of private treaty. Sales under the hammer, during the week, have been effected as follows: Best quality young Jersey dairy cows, at profit o r in full milk, £ls 10 s to £lB 10s, good quality Jersey dairy cows at profit or in full milk £ls 10s to £lB 10s, good quality Jersey and Jersey cross £l2 10s to £l4 10s,- oters £8 to £ll, best quality Jersey and Jersey cross in calf eifers £l3 to £l4 10s, good sort s £ll 10 s tb £l2 10b, more backward £7 to £9 10s. In fe paddock we have effected sales of extra choice quality fawn Jersey heifers in excellent condition, up to £lB, the sale at this figure being effected to a Waikato buyer, the vendor being Mr F. J. Loveridge, of Huirangi.

Pigs.—Good yardings (of stories and wcaners are being submitted at our various sales, and in view of the fact that feed is becoming; aj little more plentiful, the demand is naturally increasing, and prices are advancing accordingly. The prices at present ruling range as follow: stores in fair condition 30 s to, 325, poorer sorts 25s to 275, best slips 21s to 235, choice weaners 17s to 19s, others 12s to 145.. FEILDIGG STOCK SALE. Messrs Levin and Co. Ltd., report a smaller yarding- of sheep and a very full entry of dairy stock at the Feilding sale on Friday 9th August. The breeding ewes yarded were of rather an inferior class, while hoggets were in keen demand and sold at prices comparing more than favourably with recent sales. There was another large entry of dairy stock which mot with good competition, till later on in the afternoon when the buyers practically deserted the yards having filled) their requirements iu fjhei meantime. We report having made the following sales: Fat ewes 26s to 2<S.« Gd, fat wethers 695, fat lambs 22s 2d, wether hoggets 21s Gd to 27 s Id,, owe hoggets SGs 6 to 90s 9d, 4 and 6 year 1 ewes r.w.
