In regard to the development of the secondary industries, Mr H. B» Jenkins stated in the House on Thursday that an attempt should I* 1 made to produce motor spirit from New Zealand raw material, and tar products from coal for use on New Zealand roads. These steps would do a good deal in the direction of, restoring the trade balance with the United States. The possibilities of the wood pulp industry had been emphasised, and he suggested the utilisation of stream s and waterfalls which abounded in the country to provide nitrate and other products for the use of farmers and for export. The development of the fruit and vegetable industries should remove the necessity for importations of canned goods of, tms kind. —Press Assn.
