EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

The Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward stated that at a meeting of the central committee, attention was drawn to outside statements 'as xo the administration of relict hauls, and the criticism of the application forms. It was emphasised that the policy of the committee was that the relict funds should he used first of all to assist those in' need, and'that it was the duty of the various committees to see the money so generously subscribed by the public was expended in such a manner as to ensure that benefit was' conferred on those who most needed it. As to the declaration form it was similar to those used in other relief measures, and no exception had been taken to it then. As to the statement that the method adopted were too slow, the committee considered it was not possible to adopt any system other than agreed to alb" a previous meeting, whereby those in need of assistance were required to make application on the prescribed form. The committee wished 'to make it clear that there was. no delay on its part, and the distribution of the fund must b ( entirely governed by the applications recommended by district committees. The Central Committee was not yet in receipt of any completed applic ations, endorsed by the district com, mittees. It was agreed by the committee that from #6 information so far available, the relief funds would not be sufficient to provide assistance for all sufferers. Further funds would undoubtedly be required to provide anything like the monetary assistance necessary. THE STRATFORD FUND.
