"STRATFORD EVENING POST" ADDRESS-IN-REPLY.

the A ddress-in-Reply debate lias ended, and the country is not much better off as a result of the many long- and wearisome speeches delivered. Sir Joseph Ward, the Prime Minister, cannot be held responsible for the prolonged display of verbosity for as he said, lie could not well curtail the desires members to join in the discussion. Eor the most part, the standard of the speeches delivered was decidedly poor, and they contributed very little worth while. It has been said from the Reform I side of the House, that the Government prolonged the debate to enable them to get their legislation ready. But the Reform members themselves kept the “fire going”. If they were as anxious, as they professed to be, that the more or less useless flow of talk should end, why did they not follow in the footsteps of the Labour Party, and_ say less. It must also be admitted that many of the Reform members indulged in speeches which were not without bitterness and which showed that they found' their defeat a bitter pill to swallow. They seemed to think the Government shoul(Thieve put all its election promises into operation in the few short months since the election, which comes , well from representatives of as | party that held office for years and whose chief characteristic was its Micawber like hope in something turning up. Most of the criticism levelled was effectively answered from the Government Benches, and the intentions of the party in power have been clear!v set forth. Whether those intent ions arc put into practice depends upon the support forthcoming from the other oarties. The public have shown that, they approve of the United Policy, and that being so. the Government ran face the future without fear. It is all verv ( well far Mr Samuel and some of i Ins colleagues to talk about a t chance of feeling In the conn- j tvv. .Ary o"p can sav that but tlie indications °re otherwise, and in any ease Mr Samuel and those who talk In similar st v °T do not seem anxious to put their opinion to the acid test.
