WHANGAMOMONA. FOOTBALL. The football season opened on Saturday when a practice match was played Whanga v. Old Boys (a team comprised of players of previous years). After a very interesting and keenly contested game Whanga were victorious by 6-3. Old Boys kicked off with the sun at their backs, but Whanga (black) returned play to half-way where it remained for a good while, Whanga. eventually working their way to the opponent's line. From a melee G. Cooper (Old Boys) attempted to clear but Madden fielded and crossed well out. W. Hight failed to convert. 3 —o. From the kick-off play hung in midfield nntU Hancock secured and broke away, when blocked he transferred to Madden, who after making some headway returned to Hancock who crossed tho line, but was recalled for a forward pass. From the ensuing scrum the ball travelled right through the black backs to G. O'Dea on the wing, who made a smart dash, beating several men and scored. Hancock failed with the kick 6-0.

Old Boys attacked from the kickoff and carried play to the opponent's twenty-five, the ball went over the line, the blacKS forcing. From the kick play was transferred to the opposite end of the fiield where G. O'Dea crossed but was recalled for offside. On resuming after the interval play was mostly in neutral territory until Old Boys finally worked their way to the blacks' twenty-five when K. Hight (Whanga) secured from a scrum and put in a good run down the sideline. He reached the Old Boys' twenty-five and was soundly tackled by Cooper, the ball rolling into touch. Old Boys, attacked from the line-out and took~"play to the blacks' line where Cooper got over, but lost the ball, K. O'Dea forcing. Old Boys kept up tlw attack until G. O'Dea secured and ran tojjhe opposing twenty-five, being forced out. The ball was brought into play again and J. Carver (Old Boys) broke away | and dribbled to the Whanga line where G. Partridge, who had followed up, carried on and scored. Cooper failed to improve the score. 6 —3. Cooper fielded in the kick-off and carried play to the blackTs twentyfive, but Whanga returned play to midfield where it remained until the final whistle, sounded shortly afterwards. Whanga 6, Old Boys 3. Mr. A. Murphy was referee. SEVERAL NEW PLAYERS. The Whanga team this year comprises of several young and new players, who, on their showing on Saturday, after a little practice, will undoubtedly develop into a rattling good side. Mr. W.
