SMOKE CONCERT. The smoke concert held at Kohuratahi on the first night of the trials was Avell attended. Mr K. Summerhpyes was voted as chairman and began the evening by toasting the King. Mr Mclntyre spoke briefly on the formation cf the Sheep Dog Trial Association, and the difficulties it had to overcome in its early stages. The financial side had caused the most trouble, hut this had been successfully dealt with and now the Association was well on the way to success, and a meeting to revise the rules would be held in Hawera soon. The Whangamomona Club was a part of the Association, continued the speaker, and from the way it was run it was soon going to he One of the foremost clubs.

Mr Goldfinch, the judge of the trials, in responding to a toast, said he was pleased to attend such a well-run meeting, and the only complaint he had to offer was not against the club but' against the rules, which did not give points for style which he thought ought to be given, as sometimes this was all that one could judge two dogs fr’om. Mr G. Murphy, in proposing a toast to the neighbouring clubs, said it was partially due to them that the Whanga Club is becoming so successful, and he hoped they would e'eme again in future years, when the club would have the trials well in order.

Mr Mclntyre, in responding, said more praise was due to those who gave grounds, which incidentally were cf such a formation that they made an ideal spot to held trials in, and which was going to help make these trials one of the foremost. Another thing which had impresed him was the way in which the trials were run, as no time had been wasted and the sheep had been run out in a wa y that was fair to all com-

petitors. / Mr Murphy said he had much

pleasure in proposing a toast to the Secretary, without whom the trials would not have been a success, as he had worked harder than anyone

to make the trials the success they

were assured oik In responding, Mr Curry thanked

them for their toast, but h e was sure that he had not done. any more than any of the other helpers, hut ’had been backed up by a committee which had done all in their power | to make a success of the trials.
