FOUR MEN CHARGED
ALLEGED THEFT OF MAILS. DEMANDED ON BAIL, Press Association—-Copyrichfc-AVELLINGTON, Fob. 21. Four arrests were made yesterday in connection with the mail robbery fan the Wahine during the trip from Lyttelton to Wellington on Saturday night week, and today Thomas Gordon (22), Richard Ryan (26), George Wilfred Ryan (24), and Arthur Henry William Bevan (23), appeared before Mr E. Page, S.M. The public gallery at the rear of the Cl|ourt was crowded. The first three accused are taxi-drivers, and Bevan is described as a plumber and a labourer. The charge was of stealing from the tVahinc about £l6O in money, a lady’s wristletj watch, a fountain pen and a ring, the total value be-
ing £l7O. On Application of Ibe Chief Detective they were remanded till February 27.
Asked by the Magistrate if he opposed bail, the Chief Detective ■ said the facts were that fan the night .of February 9, the mails on the steamer Wahine were pillaged, and a large number oP mail bags and postal packets were opened and their contents, money and goods, amounting to about £l7O, were stolen. Ebme .of the stolen property had been recovered. Accused were charged with an offence (for which bail (could bo, granted at His Worship’s discretion.
He did oppose bail, but ho asked that it be substantial. Accused were each admitted to
bail on their own bonds of £2OO and tvrfo sureties of £2OO.
