FOUR MEN CHARGED

ALLEGED THEFT OF MAILS. REMANDED ON 15AIL, Press Association—Copyright. WELLINGTON, This Day. Four arrests were made yesterday in connection with the mail robbery ?on the Wahine during the trip from Lytt'clton to Wellington on Saturday night week, and today Thomas Gordon (22), Richard Ryan (26), George Wilfred Ryan (2J4), and Arthur Henry William Sevan (23), appeared before Mr B. Page, S.M. The public gallery at the rear of the Clfourt was crowded. The first three are taxi-drivers, and Sevan is describ- i ed as a plumber and a labourer.

The charge was ot stealing from the Wahine about £l6O in money, a lady’s wristletj watch, a fountain pen and a ring, the total value being £170., On .application of the Chief Detective they were remanded till February 27.

Asked by the Magistrate if he opposed bail, the Chief Detective said the facts' were that fm the night .of February 9, the mails on the steamer Wahine were pillaged, and a large number of mail bags and postal packets were opened and their contenta, money and goods, amounting to about £l7O, were stolen.
