CLOSER SETTLEMENT.

At She present time mere is a keen demand fori laud from those who have been waiting for some years for an opportunity. The need of file m'oment is to satisfy that demand, not only for the sake of the would-be settlers, but still more for the good of New Zealand. In 'the South Island the Minister of Lands should find plenty of scope for his energies. Something like forty years ago the young men of the south began their migration to what was then almost unknown territory, the bush country of the North Island. With the passage of time the conditions which compelled farmers’ sons to move from the South to the North to-day is ready for a change in the flow of the tide. Oil - cumstances combine to favour the prosecution of a vigorous settlement 1 scheme for the South Island. Mr Forbes should be able to turn them t 0 good account and in this island establish a foundation foi the comprehensive policy which he probably has in mind. —Lyttelton Times.
