ENGINEER’S RETORT.

The following report 1 on the work

of the past, month wag presented at this morning's meeting of the Stratford County Council by the Engineer, Mr J. W. Spence: North Riding—The balance of the shell-rock from the Stanley Road pit has been crushed and distributed for maintenance on various roads, a portion being used in metalling part of the Croydon Road East. The tunnel under 'the Rutland Road has

been completed, also the ditches at the inlet and outlet ends when the water was diverted through the tunnel. A start was made with the widening of the tilling over the old wooden culvert.

South Riding.—Clay blinding has been carried out on Victoria, Sole, Warwick, Skinner North and Climie Roads. Where necessary the bitu-

men surfaces of other roads have been; re-blinded. The Bird Road between the Mountain Road and the Ngaere Stream ihas been ico&Ved with road oil. About 20 chains of the Robson Road which was re-fac-cd last season has also received a coat. A road oil dressing has been placed on the 'Wingrove Road from the Waihapa Road to the top of the hill. The Finnerty Road between the Mountain Road and the second bridge has been bitumen dressed. The bridge over the Ngaere Stream, Climie Road, is being re-decked. East Riding (Toko and Douglas). —The grader' has been run over the sides of the following roads: Mangaotuku, Oh ura, Ohura-Mangaehu, Oruru, Crown, Makuri (metal), Makuri (clay), Douglas* South (clay) and Waiwiri. The overhanging fern has been cut ‘on the Makuri, the culverts in places lowered and water-tables cleaned out. The bitui men surface between Toko and Douglas has been re-blinded. A concrete culvert has been built on the Standish Road to replace an old wooden bridge, which has been tern-

porarily repaired t'o carry traffic till the concrete is set.

East Riding (Huiroa).—General re-

pair work has been carried out on the Makuri Road, where a sharp bend has been cut back and the water-tables cleaned out. A small bridge on the Tunupo Road has been repaired. Douglas North surface has been crowned up and watertabled. Fern cutting was done on the Akama Road, where water-tables, also those on the Heao Track, have been attended to.

West Riding.—Several bad corners on the Opunake No. 1 Road have been cut .back. Included in this work is a bend near Shannon’s Hill deviation, the material removed being used to widen the formation on the deviation. The formation has been widened on (other 1 parts of the road. Blinding has been swept from the sides on to the bitumen surfaces to prevent bleeding. Claybl hiding ami metal-banking have been done, on the Waingongoro Road. Mangaehu Riding^- —During the dry weather a. considerable amount 1 of time has been occupied in reblinding the metalled surfaces, most of the material used being obtained from the road sides.
