THE RIVER.

TO THE EDITOR Sir,—l was very pleased' to read Or. Ward’s remarks He the PateaJ River. We arc at present—very commendably boosting our Mountain for all wo are worth,, but dp the rnaiority of us ever stop to think what .a beautiful asset—and a near one—we have in our river. There are many who can. never or se?oom. visit the mountain, but the'nver is alway* with us and I think we should use every effort in keeping it a. place of beauty. Personally I marvel at the Way it is allowed to be polluted without a protest from our City Fathers. I have repeatedly seen, on the suspension bridge children (some very old; ones) with 1 carts of rubbish—old, tins, bottles, elo, which they were busily throwing into the water beneath, Surely this should be a punishable offence as we pay a rubbish col. lector, and when 1 contemplate the danger to children who in summer, delight in paddling, it makes me! shudder to think that such vandalism should be permitted. Another thing, I would ask our Mayor and! Councillors to view the. river from our town bmige, where they will see the water beautifully clear and the i iver bed, clean, and then to just go the short distance to Swansea Bridge and compare conditions there. In the latte? place for the greater part of the day the water is a dirty cream colour and the river bed pearly always thick witbl slime, both conditions arising from drainage. In the nam© of all that stands for health, purity aucTheauty, surely these matters could! be altered and I trust that Cr. Ward and his colleagues wifi not J res£ until they are. Trusting a more able P Gn take this matter up- T am etc., ■'PATFJA”.
