THE 1928 COMMITTEE
WHAT DOES IT STAND FOR. A CANDID OPINION. Mr J. B. Richards, chairman of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce, at the meeting of that' body on Wednesday evening, gave a candid opinion of the aims of the 1928 committee.
When a letter was read inviting the Chamber t'o send delegates to a general meeting to bo held! at Wellington on Wednesday, Mr Riehairdfs said the committee might be doinguseful work, but it seemed to he very much like the Welfare League. It semed to be composed of people who wanted political power without acquiring it through the usual channel. If people wanted t 0 get info politics, the door was open—let them stand for election to Parliament. He had a great pile of report's of what the committee was doing. He did not see why there should be such an organisation,. obviously seeking political power. If the committee desired to 'have political powetr let them ally themselves with one or other of the parties, or even with th 3 third party. Mr W. L. Kennedy: What are the aims of the committee? Mr Richards: Oh, th e welfare of the country as a whole. You know the kind of things they say. But it exists ' chiefly to protect its own business : interests. , , ~ ;■_ u ! 'fsl.
