ENGINEER'S DISAPPEARANCE
SWAGMAN DETAINED BY ...POLICE..., SAID TO COMB FROM NEW; ZEALAND., MELBOURNE. Jan. 31. The police inquiring into the disappearance of Mr. Leslie, Williams, electrical engineer, whose, motorcar was found at Donnybrook, near Melbourne, at the week-end, have detained a,t Murtoa, northern Victoria, the swagman who yesterday told a strange story. that he was given a lift in somebody's car and was attacked and robbed of £7 10s, He said the attack occurred on the same night that Mr Williams'' car was found abandoned. The swagman was traced 200 miles and is now charged with vagrancy. Hia original story to the Donnybrook hotelkeeper was repeated at the Cbbnrg suburb, where he told the police he; wa fl attacked bv a motorist who gave him al lift. He was robbed and then thrown on the roadside. There is a wound over Ins left eve and his singlet is bloodstained. The police are now questioning him in a Melbotvrne lock-up. Ho gives the name of Vlscoe, and says he came from New Zealand. There i 8 no trace of Mr. Williams: The police are dragging rivers and waterholes.
