■ I Mr Samuel Ernest McCarthy, a solicitor and formerly a, stipendary magistrate., died last evening, says a Christchurch Press Association message. Mr. McCarthy had been in vigorous health until recently, when he became ill and entered a private hospital for an operation. He had been a magistrate at Clyde, Invercargill, Napier, Wellington and Christchurch, retiring from the bench on a, pension four years ago.
