THE OLD STABLES.
TO THE EDITOR •gSlr.—The! sjtory published hi the "Post" regarding the old stables of Stratford was very interesting, but surely am omission was made.. J refer to the stable in Broadway North, j nearly opposite the Fire Station.,, I ' Believe it was erected by Mr. M. I. Jury in connection with bis .'wood and coal business. Towards the ; end of its days it was a public stable and was in charge of Mr, Smith. Messrs. Hopkins and Davis hired! part of the stable and used it as a motor garage, and when this, business extended the stable was closed. A big building to the south of this stable was erected for use as a stable but was never used as such. For a term this building was used as a picture theatre, and was then converted) into a garage. The erection of the present fine concrete garage buildings on the site of these 'two buildings- is a matter of very recent history. It is worth recording that up to the very recent times a horse stable was regarded as a necessary building in connection with private residences, a|ad up to about seven years ago it used to be possible to accommodate in stables in various parts of the town all the racehorses which came to the Stratford races. Then, with the increasing vogue of the motor car it became increasingly difficult to put the horses up, and the Racing Club has had to provide boxes on the course. The motor cars in the town make a fine display, but I sometimes doubt if they ire such a pretty sight as the many fine gig turnouts to be seen in Stratford not so very many years ago.—l am, etc., OLD TIMER.
