CONSTITUENTS OF COAL
METHOD OF EXTRACTION
OPERATION. EXPLAIN ED
All interesting item in the. display at tile iiigh {School yesterday was the distillation of coal and a diagram of the latest process of treating coal.
Up to very recently, coal has been put into tin; lire; and it s most valuable constituents driven off to form smoke. By this latest process!, in which the coal is led into a sloping, revolving furnace and heated by a current of hot gas, the valuable constituents £jucli as petrol, pitch, j)i(;sc] oil, lubricating oils, and t! ig> base materials for dyes, medicines and explosives are recovered instead of forming smoke.
The residue, which falls out at the lower end of the furnace, is made into a smokeless fuel which has a greater hoatin gvalue than coal itself.
By permitting the economical production of oils from coal, this now 1 process will help to save the unemployment situation in the coal districts of England, and, in New Zealand ,where the coals are high in oily constituents, the process is likely to bo , 0 c great, value to tire, motor industry, and a spnrkless, smokeless fuel would be a great boon to our factories and railways,:
