FINANCIAL WIZARD PLACED UNDER ARREST

Known as Madame; la, Presideute, a financial wizard operating ()l iq .of the most gigiijntjic) get-rich-quick ever devised, Madame MarThai Ha nan was arrested to-day with her divorced husband, Lazare Bloch. Ihe news spread, very rapidly and panic-stricken investors rushed to the sumptuous marble-fronted offices from which Madal’ue, with Bloch and a. staff of 250, directed ciicnnousi operations. A crowd with many drawn faces shouted angry taunts. One man, beside, himself with rage, waved a cheque for 300,000 francs which he declared the bank had refused to cash. Among the victims are deputies, ninis, priests and widows of officers. It is stated the total involved,, is over £],000,000. The Daily Telegraph’s correspondent even mentions possible losses of £3.500-000. When the scandal was broached in the Chamber of Deputies this evening, the Minister of Finance gave an assurance that justice would he done. Besides running the Gazette du France Madame founed five .shareinvesting agencies in France and abroad. —Australian P.A.
