WATERSIDERS SENT BACK OT WORK
NO SUPPORT FROM J ... OTHER UNIONS. j GENERAL STRIKE NOT WANTED PROMISE OF CONFERENCE WITHDRAWN. (Received 9.20 a.m.) MELBOURNE, TMs Day. A conference of representatives of Maritime Unions under the auspices of the Australian Council of Trades Unions ha s ordered all strikers l on the waterfront to resume work under the Beeby award. The mar jority of representatives! objected to the widening of the breach by dragging in the outside unions, simply because of the introduction of volunteer labour by the employers. The carriers' and drivers' representatives declared they were not prepared to have their wember s embroiled in a general strike. All present expressed bitter resentment at the Federal Government's attempt to conscript labour by means of the recently enacted legislation placed in the hands of the Commonwealth Arbitration Court. The waterside dispute has now been left in the hands of the Australian Council of Trades Unions). CANNOT CONTROL MEMBERS. The shipowners have withdrawn their promise of a conference to the waterside federation because of the Federation's inability to control its l own members. —Australian Press Association. '
