OVERSEAS SETTLEMENT HARDLY BEEN TACKLED

BRUCE WANTS BRITISH CO-OPERATION DEVELOPMENT OF DOMINIONS. AVENUES OF EMPLOYMENT. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph Copyright. (Received 9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, Thi s Day. The Prime Minister, Hon. S. M. Bruce, addressed the Chambers of Commerce dinner when he declared that Britain should co-operate in the development of the Dominions. While the influx of t migrants) to Australia should be limited to the absolution of the powers of the Commonwealth, Mr Bruce hoped that Australia’s small population would receive assistance in carrying i|ts growing interest burden. Britain was spending upwards of fifty million sterling upon doles, and surely then it would be worth while spending small sums in interest towards the provision of useful avenues* of employment, for men whose morale undre the present system was being undermined. LACK, OF UNDERSTANDING. Indeed, only a fraction of the fifteen millions earmarked by the British Government five years ago, for overseas settlement, had been spent, which showed that the problem had never really been tackled, and disclosed a lack of understanding by the British Ministers and commercial men regarding the great possibilities and potentilities of Australia and other Dominions. — Australian Press Assn.
