; CONTROL OF HIGHWAYS. A FLOCK OF REMITS. Press Association— Coovright WELLINGTON, July 18. A flock of remits concerning* the Main Highways Act was presented to the Counties’ Conference to-day. It was decided to urge the extension of the principle that the cost of constructing road surfaces be paid three-fourths by ‘ the Main Highways Board and one-fourth by the ' local body in the case of roads round large centres and to other centres. The nationalisation of highways was discussed at length, and also the position of secondary highways and by-roads. There seemed little desire to hand over control of roads, and several speakers suggested incraesins the petrol tax. Among th e remits carried by the conference was one urging Hie desirability of all local authorities either jointly or severally establishing a superannuation fund, and cutive to consider a suitable scheme.'
