NOTES FROM ALL PARTS. THE DOMINION DAY BY DAY* HERE, THERE, AND EVERYWHERE WELLINGTON OPIUM' PENS'. Marriages in (hunch. The only bill thrown out by the Waikato Diocesan Synod was one amending the' financial regulations, states a Hamilton correspondent, The bill, which was introduced by Mr L. B. Gilfillan, provided for an increase in the charge for the publication of marriage bans from 5s to 155.. Considerable opposition to the proposal was expressed on the grounds that people should be encouraged to be married in church. Canons G. H. Gavin and J. L. A. Kayll, Archdeacon E. M. Cowie f the Rev. H. G. Jones, and Messrs H. A. Swarbrick and D, Hay opposed the increase, while Bishop Cherrington and.Mr Qilfillan; supported the measure. ' Mr Jones said it would cost S 3 17s. 6d to bef married in church under the proposed bill, £1 2s 6d for the certificate, TS S : : for the bans, and £2 which was "usually given, to the clergyman. The Bishop interposed that the £2 was' a present and could not be regarded as a. charge. Mr Hay said a greater number of Presbyterians were married in church than Anglicans. The motion to pass the second reading was lost on the voices. * * * Sp«ed Means Money. Nobody can as fully appreciate a good road surface as the man who drives over it, but the cost of lay-! ing a fine surfaced road i s less apparent. The better the surface, the faster compatible with comfort the motorist can travel, and quite a lot of money can' whizz by underwheel in a very short spfce of time. During the past four years the Main Highways Board has expended over £3,000,000, covering' 450! miles of metal road, 240 miles of tar and bituminous roads, and 27 miles of concrete roads, as well as oyer 4 miles of bridges, of which the 27 miles of concrete roads in the Auckland district have cost £250,000: There are still many necessary roads to construct jtn various parts of the Dominion, though the total mileage dealt with by the board is appreciable and the high cost of the,|7 miles alluded to, excellent and maintenance saving as the work is, is strikingly apparent when it is .realised what a brief spin jt gives the car owner. Three-quarters- of an hour would be a generous estimate of the time taken to cover it To complete the 6901 miles of-the main highway between Wellington Uand Auckland, supposing that the same material were used throughout, would mean a cost of some £9,000,000, yet this distance has been covered, on the existing surface, in some fourteen hours.
