MOTORIST'S NEGLIGENCE
. DEATH OF MRS. GERAGHTY. w CAR DRIVER PINED. AUCKLAND, July 4.' A motorist’s failure to give way to a bus approaching an intersection on his right was held yesterday to be the cause of a fatal smash between a motor-car and a bus which happened at the corner of Green Lane and Wheturangi Road, on the evening of May 8. The bus, owned by the Te Papapa Motor-Bus Company, capsized, a number of paseugrs being injured. One, Mrs. Julia Geraghty, subsequently died from her injuries. Yesterday an inquest was held on tiie death Of Mrs. Geraghty, and in conjunction with it evidence was heard against Hopkins on the charge of negligent driving. Henry Day, driver of the bus, said he crossed the intersection at about 15 miles an; hour. As he approached it he looked off both sides to see that there was no traffic approaching. As he came to the centre of the intersection there was a crash and the bus toppled over. As coroner, the magistrate returned a verdict that Mrs. Geraghty’s death was due to degeneration of the heart, accelerated by fracture of the spine and other injuries received in the accident. As /Magistrate, Mr. F l . Ki. Hunt held that Hopkins had been negligent in his failure to observe the rule of the road. Hopkins was fined £5 and ordered to pay £5 costs.
