MAJORITY IN ENGLAND.

That the low-powered car is preeminent in England is amply demonstrated by statistics just published by the Ministry of Transport. The figures relate t 0 the 1927 quarter, ended September 30th, and provide much interesting information regarding the numbers of cars registered in the various districts in England, Scotland and. Wales. In addition, a table is set aside 'for analyses of the registrations under the different horse-powers.

In'England pride of place is taken by the London County Council, with which 81,01 licences ' were current during the quarter under review, while among the county boroughs Birmingham heads the list with 119,203. Of Scottish counties Lanarkshire comes first with 4098, and among the Scottish burghs Glasgow is in the lead with the Glamorgan County Council shows the highest figure, namely, 6477, and among county boroughs Cardiff stands first with '4053. The totals are: England 689,344; Scotland 64,432; and Wales 32,834, making a; grand total of 786,610. It is interesting to observe that during the corresponding quarter in 1926 the total for Great Britain was 683,913,: showing an increase for ’the year of 102,697.

SMALL CAR POPULAR. In , view of the modern tendency towards the production of cars with small engines, it is not surprising to find that the great majority of licences for private cars, were issued in respect of vehicles wvith ’power units not exceeding 14 h.p. The most startling contract occurs between the licences for cars of between 11 and 12 h.p., of which theie were 203,834, and for those between 46 and 47 h,p., where the total was no more than 4. The growing popularity of the very small car is demonstrated by the fact that of the 7-8 h.p, class there were no fewer than 54,668 licences current, as against 35,431 twelve months befoie. The biggest increase is shown in the 11-12 h.p. class, where the total of 174,641 in 1926 has grown to 203,834 last year.
