At Ashburton on Saturday A. E. Ellis had a run of bad luck. He lost a stirrup at the start of the Moreton Hack in which he was riding the favourite, Waihenoe. He had a similar experience with Town Bank, who was second favourite in the Mayfield Handicap. The mishaps occurred with different saddles. * * * Mr H. Rothery stated on Saturday that Glendowie will not keep his engagements at Trentham. >* * * S. Henderson will Tide Beau Cavalier in the Wellington Steeplechase and Winter Hurdles. * * * The Riccarton trainer, H. Nurse, started a horse in each of the galloping events at Ashburton on Saturday, aud they raced very consistently,' none of them being further back’ than second. Chickwheat won the chief event on the flat, while laglhtheaTted, Greyfinch, Oriflamb and Lancer each filled second place. * * * Hollycorabe who, after such a short time in work did well to win the Hunt Cup Steeples at Hastings, is not to be overtaxed this season.
